Material

Traditionally shuttlecocks are made of either duck or goose feathers. Goose feathers are naturally stiffer, more solid and have a better micro structure compared to duck feathers. Making them the preferred choice for tournaments and high level play. That being said, duck feathered shuttles have their place in the market as they still preform better than nylon shuttles, and are generally cheaper compared to their goose counterparts. Being softer and lighter, it's slower drop speed can cater to casual and beginner lever players.

Nylon or common called "plastic shuttles" are primally used by beginners, recreational players or those looking to play outdoors. What it lacks in precise and stable flight it makes up for in durability. A nylon shuttle will generally last you 5 times longer than any feathered shuttle. Making it an ideal choice for those aren't looking to play too competitively or are planning to play with children.

New to the market are synthetic shuttles, design to replicate feathered ones but at a lower cost. Made from LDPE ( Low-Density Polyethylene) and carbon composite stems. While the quality is competitive, synthetic feathers have been observed to feel heavier on the drop compared to feathered ones. Regardless it provides a suitable alternative to players who are looking for the same quality feel of premium goose feathered shuttles at a budgeted price. 

Speed Ratings 

Shuttles are rated for speeds 75 - 79 or 1 - 5. These numbers should be selected based on the environmental factors such as altitude and temperature.

• Slow Speed (75/76) Best for hot, or humid weather or high altitudes where the air is thinner.
• Medium Speed (77) Ideal for moderate everyday playing conditions. Ideal for most indoor courts.
• Fast Speed (78/79) Made for cold, dry weather or air-conditioned indoor halls where the shuttle flies slower.

Performance Differences

Shuttles, especially feathered ones have different grades in terms of durability and flight performance. Professional shuttlecocks( typically made from goose feathers) tend to be stiffer, providing a more solid, natural spin and better control over softer shuttles - coming at the cost of durability. More casual use shuttles especially those made with duck feathers then to be softer. Which bends slightly on the flight making the quality of control significantly less, though that softness lessens the impact the feathers take on hit. Giving the feathers less of chance to snap.
As such, the grade of the shuttle may not always offer the most durable shuttle, but one that performs the best.
