The requirement in Malaysia is not warmth or wind resistance, it is moisture management. A proper badminton shirt moves sweat off the skin and dries between rallies rather than holding it; cotton does the opposite and gets heavier as the session goes on.

Cut matters too. Badminton shirts are cut for full overhead extension, so the hem stays put through a smash instead of riding up.
